Mount A students `shine' their way to a cure for CF, Sept. 10

SACKVILLE, NB - For over 30 years, Mount Allison students have been raising money to help fight cystic fibrosis (CF) by participating in Shinerama, and 2005 is no exception. Over 400 Mount A students will be out in force on Saturday, September 10, raising funds to help find a cure for CF in Sackville, Amherst, Aulac, and the Greater Moncton Area.

This year the Mount A shine team has set their goal at $17,000 to contribute to the national goal of one million dollars. Activities include, shining shoes, barbecues, raffles, as well as a pre-Shinerama Dooly's night fund raiser in Sackville on September 8. Shinerama is Canada's largest post-secondary fund raiser, annually involving over 30,000 students from 60 colleges and universities working together to find a cure for cystic fibrosis.

As part of the Shinerama fund raiser this year, Mount Allison students will also be available to extend a "Helping Hand" to the Sackville community. Shinerama participants will be available for odd jobs to local residents on September 10, with all donations going towards CF research. If you are a Sackville resident and would like to hire a student(s) for the day in support of this worthy cause, please contact Christine Robichaud at 364-2231 (sacshinerama@mta.ca) before September 10.

About Cystic Fibrosis and Shinerama

Cystic Fibrosis (CF), which is fatal, clogs the lungs with thick sticky mucus making it impossible to breathe. It also makes digesting food difficult. There is no cure for cystic fibrosis but there is hope for the future with medical research. The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was established in 1960 and Shinerama, which began in 1964, is one of the organization's biggest fund raisers. When the fund raiser began the mean age of survival for a child with CF was four years of age, now after four decades of shiners, the mean age of survival is 37.
